And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Meh, not so much. That M109 Paladin SP howitzer (if it's the current A6 model) weighs 63,600 pounds. An M1A3 Abrams tank weighs 147,200 pounds. All by itself. So that C-5 could carry two of those SP howitzers, and still take off lighter than if they carried just one tank.
That we built a plane with enough lift to pick up the Abrams at all, and built it 54 years ago, is to me the bigger miracle.
Which is nice, but that's also spread out all over that 747. Try doing it with all that weight in one concentrated spot 12 feet wide and 26 feet long, and I suspect you'd have a new bomb bay in that 747 in short order.
Lot of lift from a wing. A surprising amount of lift. For reference, each wing on a 747 produces 167,000 lbs of lift at take off speed. A B52 carries around 67,900 lbs of fuel. Add a bomb load 80,000 to 100,000 lbs, with wing bomb mounts, one model i believe carries like 110,000 lbs of bombs.
The Aluminum Eclipse eats another victim.
ReplyDeletehopefully bringing it back from Afghanistan.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that you are joking. "Old - Slow Joe" left all of our equipment for the ISIS terrorists.

The doggies (US Army) just OK-ed the medium-weight M-10 Booker "tank" so those ultra heavy bastards will most likely be a thing of the past.
DeleteA 747 freighter can carry 248k lbs. Just for reference.
ReplyDeleteThey used to piggyback a Space Shuttle on one.

ReplyDeleteWhere's that going? Zelensky?
ReplyDeleteIt isn't going to protect our border.
DeleteYou can bet on that.
