And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It was way past overdue for retirement. It was hugely expensive to operate and a lot of missions it flew could've been done just as well for less money with expendable rockets except for the government pushing as many missions its way as possible trying to justify its existence. Musk is showing how to do all those missions and much, much more with Falcon 9 and Starship/SuperHeavy. If the FAA will stop dragging its feet, SS/SH development and flight testing would be moving along much faster. Shuttle was actually an advanced (but crippled by post-Apollo budget cutting) design for the 1970s, and becoming quite obsolete in many ways by the end. Slow flight pace and how many billions of dollars for each flight?
And we can thank that asshat Obama for scrapping them.
