  1. What’s the purpose of the net? …. To restrain or secure the craft in turbulent seas..??

    1. Wet steel decks have no friction to keep the bird from sliding off a rolling and pitching deck, and civilian ships' pads are seldom coated with non-skid like military flight decks are. The net provides a better surface to keep the helo in place.

  3. The reason they really don't like using nets anymore is because of the chance of hooking a skid into one. They've caused a crash or two that way. I haven't seen one used on a rig since around 1990. This does look like operator error though, unless he had a malfunction in the drive train.

    1. This looks like a tail rotor failure or a stuck control pedal.
