And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
1892 got to be one of the handiest rifles invented, specially with the big lever loops, gives your fingers some comfy shooting room. Grand dad left me a really wore out barrel 92 in 38-40, Being a basic machinist got a barrel blank from Douglas, converted it to 44mag. 38-40 uses same case rim as 44mag, guess its a common conversion, made it a 16inch bbl too, and the same slim triangle lever loop as the piece Steve McQueen had in his TV show, not so big a loopy loop lever, came out great, pit lyman peep sights on it, excellent deer rifle, been using it for hunting since after converting it in 88'. All the bluing is totally worn off it, thing is it never rusts either. And i get to think of my good ol' pop hunting with it. Think thats why i been sticking with it all this time. Its a one shot DRT carbine, nicely accurate with 180 grn hollow points, doesn't like any heavier slugs, they go all over the place. Keep it at around a hundred yards or less which aint hard the woods around here are thick country hunting anyways. Leave it to my grandson now, imagine it, over 120 year old fully working rifle, totally viable weapon, except the bbl i replaced it has all the original factory parts. John Browning invented a lot of guns, but in the end i got to say what he truly was good at was designing enduring designs, designs so good look at all the ones he engineered still in use. Heck i got an old Ithaca 37, serial number puts it made in the early 60's, it was a state police trade in when i picked it up in 95', still all original, got one of the smoothest pumps you can stroke too, feels like its on bearing made out of mercury it slides so easily.
Lucas McCain's most amazing feat was using a rifle (Winchester Model 1892) that would not be created by John Browning until a decade after Lucas had killed over a hundred bad guys with it. Neat trick.
"Crawl! You act like a dog, crawl like one! Crawl I said, crawl!" Burl Ives, as Rufus Hannassey, to Chuck Connors as Buck Hannassey . Burl won an academy award for his portrayal.
A fantastic movie with a great cast and the best theme song in Western history.
It was Alfonso 'Steenking Badges' Bedoya's final film before he passed away at 53.
We've been watching The Rifleman (free on Roku). North Fork, New Mexico Territory is like Cabot Cove. There are fewer than 100 people who actually live in the outlying ranches, but just about every episode has at least one murder that is solved by McCain. Anyone evil eventually finds his/her way to North Fork, where they meet their demise. I think I've only seen one episode where there was a jury involved. Ahhh, the good ol' days.
And to the person, above, who bears false witness against Chuck Conners: Shame on you. Read what his fellow actors, including Johnny Crawford's, ("Mark") recollections of him. He was a good man by all accounts.
That's misinformation emanating from Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action. Lucas' wife died of Smallpox. Anybody with a functioning brain cell knows that, which is why Ms. Watts doesn't.
Sorry, but I never did "get" this program. I mean EVERY WEEK, that kid of his would have a "life event" and had to have a talkin' to by PA. That kid never seemed to wise up. Having personally lived some of those "life events"; BOY HOWDY, I wised up after a couple of 'em went sideways. Only had my PA explain to me once; what would happen if "that" happened again!
Yeah that syrupy shit wore thin, quick. Mark said "Paw" every 15 seconds it seemed. He continued that little gurl whining in a Duke movie and got his ass killed off. I laffed and laffed and laffed.
"Gunsmith James S. Stembridge modified two Model 1892s for use in regular and close-up filming. In addition, a Spanish-made Gárate y Anitúa "El Tigre" lever action, a near-copy of the Model 1892, was modified for use as a knockabout gun. The El Tigre is seen in scenes where the rifle is in a saddle scabbard and is not drawn, and in stunts where the rifle was thrown to the ground, used as a club, or in any stunt where a possibility of damage to the original Winchester 1892s existed. These three rifles were the only ones used by Connors during the run of the series."
Check out a Rifleman video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrOPVo5GFY4 that shows all of the baddies killed by Lucas McCain. It's a hoot, with a bell ringing for each kill, along with an incremented body count. I must have been a fan of that show, as I remember most of those!
Chuck Connors is one of only 13 people in history to play for both the NBA and MLB.
ReplyDeleteHe was also the first NBA player to shatter a backboard.
DeleteAnd ambidextrous!
Deletehe's in "woman of the year", maybe his first movie- in one scene he is with Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, Charles Bronson, and Alfalfa Switzer.

ReplyDeleteBring him back and start cleaning up the mess!!
ReplyDeleteHow, which mess? U know the guy was a secret pedowood gay in real life?
DeleteWas he Anonymous too?
DeleteI don't think he ever hit anything he was shooting at, well maybe the side of the barn.
ReplyDelete"He can take the head off a Popweed at 50 yards."
DeleteJust ask Marshall Sam Buckhart.
See him do some serious acting in "The Big Country", a great Grade A western.

I read somewhere that he was a widower in the program because he was always practicing cocking that rifle.

DeleteIt's getting on to about that time for most folks....keep your powder dry and rifle loaded...
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, ole Chuck would be branded with a coward's shame just a few years later.
ReplyDeletelol
Deleteanyone ever see Paul Fix smile? for that matter, get the hell out of his chair?
ReplyDeletehow many times did he fire that rifle in the opening credits?
ReplyDeleteI tried counting the shots once. The sound doesn't match the action.
DeleteThe rifles he used in the show were Italian made replicas of the 1892. Bit of trivia for yall.
