And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Not trying to be contrary, as it is your house, sir - but the Petrified Forest is fossilized remnants of a Triassic ecosystem. A bit older than a million years. At least 199 m/y older.
When Mount St Helens blew, an entire forest was petrified in an extremely short time period. Unfortunately, the new petrified wood may not be harvested. Dave
I live about an hour south and west of Petrified Forest NP and have been there a few times. Also it turns out that there’s quite a bit of petrified wood to be found outside the park on private land. In Holbrook there are a couple of dealers that sell slabs and chunks of all sizes. Although it does fracture along different lines, there are several logs in the park that have fracture lines perpendicular to the axis as if it were sawn as a log would be. Kind of cool.
Absolutely amazing ; Asa woodworker and 30+ year carpenter it would take me another 30 years to do that piece of wood justice. But I would like to pit a bid in on it

Opalized wood. Cut it into slabs with a mud saw and sell it for $$$$ as table tops.

I'm guessing that this is petrified wood. Right?
ReplyDeleteAnyone know where this shot was taken? Kinda looks like the badlands in western ND.
ReplyDelete. The Crystal Forest in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona.

ReplyDeletePick it up and make some things, so many options.
ReplyDeleteNot trying to be contrary but it can happen in a few thousand years under the right conditions (pressure, heat, and some silica).

How did the log get a squared cut back then? It didn't fall down in that shape, did it?
ReplyDeleteLooking at all the white dust at the base, maybe someone already has cut a slab or two off.
