And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
For a second there I was ready to order it but then I realized that this was first published as Carnage and Culture - Landmark Battles In The Rise of Western Power back in 2001. My copy has Grumman Avenger torpedo-bombers on the cover above a painting of the battle of Cannae. Publishers with nothing new in the pipeline take an old book, change the title slightly, change the cover art and present it as a 'new' book. That said, this is a good read. If you're the least bit interested in history and don't already have Carnage and Culture buy it. Al_in_Ottawa
Yes, an older book. But while on the Amazon book page I noticed that a 2024 update of Hanson's "The Case for Trump" is coming out in August. That I'll be getting.

Proof reading complete failure. Lepanto was 1571 not 157, Rorke's was 1879 not 187, Midway was 1942 not 194. WTF publisher!

ReplyDeleteAfter viewing this post, I purchased my own copy.
ReplyDeleteHis "The End of Everything" and "The Second World Wars" are great reads too.
ReplyDeleteA neocon. Never saw a war he didn't like.
