And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
The last firearm I purchased is a Ruger Bisley Flattop in .44 Special that I bought about ten years ago. It was immediately my favorite revolver. Besides being amazingly accurate it's got a feature that not many Blackhawks have. It's called an indexing pawl. When ejecting cases, you rotate the cylinder slightly past the chamber to be ejected and then rotate the cylinder backwards until it stops. Voila, the cylinder is now in perfect alignment with the ejection rod. It makes reloading the cylinder a snap, almost to the point you can do it without looking, such as when the bad guys up in the rocks have you pinned down.
But I digress. .44 Special is one of the all-time great calibers, with a long history being amazingly accurate.
Looks like standard 45 auto hollow point. The gun is a 1911 45 type. If you've ever shot a 44, you know the difference. I'd shoot my Dan W 44 more, but my wrist can't take it anymore.
I got some Hornaday Critical Defense .44 Special I like to keep in my .44 mag for Home/Self defense unless I'm out in the country when I switch to full house rounds.
That 1911 is 9mm, it will certainly get the job done. For a revolver, I'm quite satisfied with 357 (as if I could afford one). It also will get the job done. My fantasy revolver would be an M1917, 3" barrel, N frame S&W, with a round butt and compact grip in 45Colt/ACP. Yeah, it would require some custom work, but dreams are cheap.
Because I could. Took an old S&W Model 10, reamed the cylinder, and reb-barreled it for ,44 Special. Plenty of wall thickness remains on the cylinder. Worked up custom loads using wadcutters so they fit length wise. Deadly they be to 2 legged feral critters. Bobbed it, no sights, tapered the barrel almost to nothing, reduced swing mass, 3inches bbl, handles quick. Might handy piece. Shoots great. More accurate than my marksmanship.
I haven't pressed out any 44 ammo in over 20 years. Most of my brass is in magnum. My range time is with a 9mm and 357. Quarterly I will shoot 5 mags of 10mm as it is my daily carry. The 44 and 45 get shot once a year and then cleaned.
????…..44 Special is a revolver cartridge not a semi auto…
ReplyDeleteIt IS for a revolver, one that I need to shoot more, given how nicely it does shoot with a 44 Special.

Love the .44 S&W Special: my EDC in an old S&W 696.
