And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I just walked over to my bookcase and pulled out precisely that edition of that book. Made me think of reading my 20+ "UNCLE" paperbacks again. As John said, some of them were pretty good (much better than the show). Definitely more casually readable than Ian Fleming.
When I was little we were so poor that we didn't get GI Joe's for X-mas but Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakan from the bargain bin. No movable joints so my Dad cut half way through the elbows and knees to make them bend. And thus began my quest to become a surgeon. Didn't make it but got this neat jacket that buttons in the back.

ReplyDeleteSome of those books were pretty good. I think it was number two, The Doomsday Affair, that was the first time I encountered a quote from "1984".
