GTO in the snow

  1. That is nice but I like the Tempest GTO's better.

In 1980 my cousin bought a new black LaMans. It had AC, cruise control, auto trans, and the v-6 engine. He drove it to the local college for a year before he joined the Army where he became a Warrant officer flying helicopters. At 6 years old with 99k miles on it, the car was put on blocks with a bedsheet over it where it was left in the barn. Over time he added a Pontiac 6.6L crate engine, a performance auto overdrive trany, bucket seats, and various parts to turn the LaMans into a GTO if a GTO had been made in 1980. It was a project that he worked on the last year he was in the Army. He successfully converted his old LaMans into a GTO. Where it was a daily driver for a while then had all of the chrome re-chromed in black chrome and a new black paint job. It hit the car show circuit where it was shown off and on for 10 years. It is his weekend car now.

    1. agreed. the later model looked pregnant.

it lost the "midsize/huge engine" cachet.

    2. I had a 62 Tempest with the Trophy 4 engine and three on the tree. It was my first car, I paid 50 bucks for it.

    3. Looked at a Tempest one time, it had an over head cam straight six in it. Did'nt even know it they came that way at the time. Always regretted not buying it, a couple year earlier model than above body style.

  2. The Tempest became the LeMans, Any Pontiac guy knows that. You were obviously paying more attention to your cousin's girlfriend.

    1. It was the early days of recycling if I recall correctly, and they were using 'reprocessed' steel. The problem was that the process had not yet been perfected, and oxidized impure material was incorporated into the steel grain. So it rusted from the inside - out and the outside - in.

  6. Garbage Truck Ordinaire, as opposed to the GTX, the Garbage Truck Extraordinaire.
