Very Nice. Now do that at 55 mph.

  1. 55 would be falling out of the sky. 42 is the published max speed.

Designed in the 70's, entered service in 1980, reequipped and modified repeatedly.

It seems to be impossible to determine how many were made. Google searches produce all sorts of numbers. This site claims a total of 4,796 were made with 3,273 going to the US Army, 221 to the Marines, and 880 to Egypt:

    1. Um, no. The Army puts governors on the turbines to keep them under 55mph.

Most decent mechanics know how to defeat that feature.

    2. Been at 55 mph on ROK roads in an M1 IP in 1990 - 1991. That's not a safe speed and you don't do that sort of thing often. One other thing: "Stops on a dime" is a thing but your face doesn't doesn't decelerate nearly as fast, and if you doubt that, ask just about any tank commander how the commander's weapon station tastes.

    3. Had a buddy eat the back end of a Ma Deuce after his 113 rear ended an Abrams that stopped on a dime in front of him. He lost all 4 front teeth. Back in training the next day.

  2. Looks like a low-rider. I bet the L.A. Harbor Gateway street show folks could do smokin' donuts with it at 55mph.

    1. He'll wait until the coldest, wettest Friday afternoon of the year, but you can be sure it will happen.

  4. This M1 is heavily modified - I've been away from them for a long time - but the commander's weapon station, the independent thermal viewer, and the loader's hatch are not like anything I've seen before.

  5. Here's one from the way back machine.
When that thing was new one Dr. Ruth Davis was invited to observe it at some proving grounds. Aside from being a certified genius essential to several military projects of the day she was an fast performance car aficionado and every couple of years scored new Porsche 911s for herself and her husband. Someone mentioned this fact to a General in attendance who asked her if she would like to drive the tank which received a resounding yes! Word has it that she requested the 'manuals' and with minimal instruction & check out wrung the system out! That was the same year she was awarded the 'Lovelace award' for pioneering women in industry. There was a groundbreaking movie that came out that same year as well which had nothing to do with her but made for bad humor at some cocktail parties.
Dr.Davis was singularly and universally spectacular!

  6. Top speed is 55mph. Yeah, right. Like the top speed of our nuke carriers only do 35 knots max speed and our attack subs max out at 35 knots and our big boomers max out at 35 knots.

    Yep. Sure...

  7. You won't be doing neutral steer at 55mph.

  8. Soon to be replaced by the Stacey Abrams tank, which can eat corn on the cob through a picket fence..
