Now those are some real northern lights!

  1. In 1977 I was flying a C-130 near the arctic circle on a cold and clear winter night. The copilot was playing a tape through the intercom system of Khachaturian’s Gayane ballet suite. It was my first hearing of that wonderful piece. As we bored holes in the night sky the aurora pressed down on us as in the photo here. On that night it was mostly reds, yellows and purples. It was truly magical, and that memory never fades.

    1. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't see them in full splendor.

  3. I saw them off the coast of Greenland.
Green, yellow, pink, all flowing from one color into another.
    Magnificent.
