And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
In 1977 I was flying a C-130 near the arctic circle on a cold and clear winter night. The copilot was playing a tape through the intercom system of Khachaturian’s Gayane ballet suite. It was my first hearing of that wonderful piece. As we bored holes in the night sky the aurora pressed down on us as in the photo here. On that night it was mostly reds, yellows and purples. It was truly magical, and that memory never fades.
