The world's largest cruise ship, the Oasis of the Seas, enters Venice, Italy.

  1. I had no idea. What is passenger capacity?

  2. Can't imagine being on a ship and having 7,000 neighbors.

  3. Cruise ships are germ factories. No, thank you.

But even without the germs, I wouldn't be interested because I always heed Ol' Remus' advice, which is to "stay away from crowds".

    1. Amen to that advice - think of it daily.
God Bless Brother Remus. Sure miss his weekly view of the world.

    2. Hard pass on norovirus, I've heard the stories. Contagious diarrhea on a cruise is not my idea of a good time.

  4. What a joke... A very sad joke.

  5. Why? Because it said it could be done? poor excuse. I went on an Alaska cruise on the Norwegian line many years ago and the rude, pushy asswipes on that cruise. I will never go on another.

    1. Consider Alaska Marine Highway (the ferry system). I took their MV Taku from Pr Rupert BC to Skagway & back in 1990 with my Mazda626 and had a great time. The views are exactly the same, and it’s literally pay-as-you-go, no idiotic shows or slots, and (at least on my trip) very few children.

  6. My fair lady wife took us to Venice for my 50th, as we strolled back to our apartment one afternoon something hideous along the lines of that monstrosity had berthed alongside while we were exploring, the thing dwarfed the town.
Funny thing is, she'd almost booked us a cruise instead, seeing the hordes getting off that ship proved she chose wisely.

  8. It's as attractive as your average office block, but worse, it's full of the kind of people who go on cruises . . .

  9. Some Carribean and Mediterranean Islands are restricting these massive ships from saturating these beautiful places. There are small ships (very pricey) that have small crews and cater to smaller groups of people. Tall ships as well as much smaller cruise ships are available if ya can spare the "JING"!

    1. For many years, my scuba dive buddy and I would fly to Cozumel to scuba dive and enjoy the local hospitality. After about 10 really terrific years, the government decided to make room for huge cruise ships to dock on the island. The less-than-mental-giants dynamited several nearby coral reefs in order to accommodate those behemoths filled with rude, fat, lazy pieces of $hit passangers. My dive buddy and I ceased our twice-a-year scuba diving visits. Their loss.

  10. That’s photoshopped; Oasis doesn’t go to Venice. That said, there’s a reason the mega-ships are being banned from Venice.

  11. Pretty much all ships are banned from Venice now. And for good reasons.

  12. If my memory serves me right, covid was a huge wake up call for Venice. They had time to rethink the whole cruise ship part of the economy
The idea of more is better was destroying the infrastructure of Venice as well as the quality of life for its inhabitants.
I remember something about limiting size and amounts of cruise ships.

  13. Where's that sea tornado when you need it?

  14. I might be the victim of believing what I've read, but, those mega ships are less seaworthy than the classic cruise liners. (yes that includes the Titanic)
They depend on modern communications, satellites and avoiding all bad weather and high seas. Recently a 'rogue wave' of record height did serious damage to a mega cruise ship that never saw it coming.
Might be an interesting plot for a scifi story, mega liner after an event that wipes modern technology from the skies.

  15. One of those came into Monterey, CA about 20 years ago and it towered over everything.

  16. Photoshop. That image isn't the Oasis of the Seas (Royal Carribean Lines). That is a Princess boat, probably the Grand Princess or Ruby Princess. You can even see the Princess lines flag on the bow. I see these ships every week. The scale is also very inaccurate.

  17. Yes, that looks awfully Photoshoppy.

I have been to Venice on a cruise ship though, and coming into Venice it was glorious. The view from the ship of the entire city as you pass thru the channel is just amazing.

But up close it was a let down. The architecture is beautiful, but the canals are basically sewers, and that’s not cruise ships’ fault. Taking a gondola ride was like canoeing through a septic tank. It didn’t help that the gondolier spent the entire trip loudly arguing with somebody on his cell phone. Very romantic.

  18. We cruised the Mediterranean in May to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. Our cruise paralleled the Oasis of The Seas at several of our stops, and it is an enormous ship. Our cruise ended at what was labeled as Venice, but the port is actually Trieste, about 60 miles away.

We had a trip full of great memories, but if you don't think that you'd do the same, then you are quite free to enjoy different vacations.

  19. What a monstrosity!

  20. The Icon class is larger, with a max capacity of 7600 shark baits.

  21. The trees growing in front of the bow should be your first clue as to the Photoshopyness of this fake...
