And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Heh, I also remember James Donald from Quatermass And The Pit. It was a Hammer Horror remake from an original 6 part (B&W) series. The original is very good and also featured Christine Finn.
Read in an interview with James Garner and his thoughts on McQueen. Moody, spoiled and arrogant was how he described him. If he didn't get his way, he stormed off to his trailer and sulked until he did. Always liked McQueen, and actors/actresses can all be moody and spoiled, but Garner always seemed like a stand-up guy and a damn fine actor in his own right. Fame and money can both be a helluva game-changer in anyone's life.
McQueen top biling invented much later. I liked Steve but as Mitch said, he didn't bring a lot to the party.
Finally, after working and kicking his way to the top I do not believe Mr McQueen liked the view nor was he convinced that it had been worth the bother
Isn't this the movie where McQueen tries to fly his motorcycle over the high barbed wire fence? I understand that the stunt was performed by McQueen himself.
And by the by, McQueen was a US Marine veteran so the moodly comments may be jealousy on Garner's part.
I believe McQueen did much of the stunt riding in that film but the big stunt was done by a professional of his acquaintance. Might double check me on that stunt stuff as it has been years since I looked into it
Why? Typical Army competence amidst a clusterf**k war. Garner mentioned the slight on Johnny Carson's show, and suddenly, 30 years later in the Reagan admin, the Pentagon unassed itself, and corrected the mistake.
Epic, but 3 hrs. long.
ReplyDeleteYup, like Dr. Zhivago
DeleteYeah.
DeleteShould have been 4 or 5.
That’s a good un…
ReplyDeleteInteresting that McQueen got top billing.

ReplyDelete...but...
ReplyDeleteSPOILERS
...not much escaping.
Yeah, just sheer escapism.
DeleteThe Luftwaffe, Gestapo, and der Führer himself did not share your opinion.
DeleteNot even a little bit.
James Garner was anti-gun.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember them running like this.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites yet flawed in the real story. But The Big X ( a South African )and 49 others were murdered by the Nazis

Think Garner was a Purple Heart US Army combat vet, Korea. Mr Garner might have been able to contain his envy were it to exist

DeleteI was wrong. Looks like McQueen did get top billing. I would have thought Attenborough
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Google search, James Garner did get wounded twice in Korea but did not receive his PH medals until 1986. They did not explain why.
