And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? Having been privileged to visit Japan quite a few times, I love seeing those well-preserved ancient Japanese buildings. As many of you already know, during WW-2 Gen Douglas McArthur refused to allow our Army Air Force to bomb the ancient Japanese city of Kyoto because of the historical significance of the buildings.
Most castles in Japan are modern reproductions because they were destroyed by bombing. Matsumoto castle was one of the few that were spared. John is correct about Kyoto, except that it was Secretary of War Henry Stimson who took Kyoto off the bombing list because he recognized its cultural importance.
