And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

MS Bard, a Hybrid-Electric Catamaran operating through the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway
Meh, every American train running today uses the same type of system. A lot of ship handling tugs are using the same. The only difference between diesel electric subs and this is battery storage on the sub. Diesel runs the generator that runs the electric motors driving the props. Just not a big deal. Now get rid of the diesel for a green ship, that would be a big jump.
'Hybrid-Electric', how fashionable. I guess that means they have generators that run full time to provide power to the electrical thrusters that power the vessel, just like every other modern commercial vessel. As Rick T said, add a few batteries and presto! I guess running a diesel generator at the dock would cause Norway to tip over.
As a Machinist Mate striker I trained on diesel-electric propulsion at Great Lakes Basic Propulsion Engineering school until they split MMs, BTs and Enginemen into our speciality classes. This would have been fall winter 67-68
Nope! Sails or gas for me on the open seas.
ReplyDeleteIt was probably diesel-electric and they added a few batteries for travel in harbors.
ReplyDeleteBy that standard all submarines before nuclear power where hybrid platforms.
Hybrid works and has the range!

ReplyDeleteI embrace hybrid. Diesel electric locomotives are among the most efficient per ton vehicles on the planet. The cold does not look fun though.

ReplyDeletediesel/electric... I harken to my youth tending EMDs, GEs, and ALCOs (&a rare Fairbanks Morse)
ReplyDeleteSpent 3 years on a main propulsion ALCO diesel LST w/3 ALCO generator sets
