And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Perfect! People have been complaining that previous times were better since the beginning.
Truth is that with very small exceptions previous times were always worse than what came after. Humanity evolves, things get better as times go by. Sure, the kid storming the beaches of Normandie could say that 1938 was a better time. The Middle Ages were worse for science, engineering and humanities than the Roman Empire. But over the long arc of history things have always improved and things today are better than in the 1950's, 60's or 70's.
We have never been more free and prosperous than today and I have no interest in going back to a time that would make me poorer and lose any of my freedoms.
