  1. The price tag is equally impressive.

  2. The USMC recently announced that they will be retiring this British- designed aircraft sooner than later. Sadly, the F-35, the intended replacement, will never be completely air worthy or be able to fulfill the CAS role that it is supposed to do.

    1. That is the replacement, not the Harrier.

  4. Built to requirements that were never needed nor used. $1.2 Trillion dollar total POS. The only thing less usefull and slightly less expensive is the V22.

    2. Maybe I'm the only one who remembers those commandos dying when their Sea Knight didn't make it to the beach during the invasion of Iraq. Except for flying faster, further and carrying more, the Osprey is a failure.

The F-35B, without the gun, does seem like a mistake.

  5. Never underestimate the power of the USMC lobby.
They’re playing a part in commemorating the invasion of Normandy this week with a mock beach landing there. Few will realize they didn’t participate.

Though it is nice for them to attend the after party.

    1. Not to light a fire, but several high-ranking USMC officers were present during D-Day to help the doggies and Brits keep from totally screwing up.

  6. The precursor to "Tom Swift and his Flying Lab" a massive aircraft with 'jet lifters. His big bird also carried a jet helicopter the 'Skeeter' and a small jet fighter. Memories. Jet lifters, I reckon.

  7. That is NOT the one from New Mexico, is it?
They sure fail in spectacular ways.

  8. The swivel joint for the variable angle exhaust looks like some futuristic mid-evil armor joint, quite an impressive looking piece of metal fabrication work.

  9. Wonder how much fuel capacity had to be given up for the hi by-pass bleed air flight control ducts. I mean the aircraft does not look like it has a lot of fuel capacity in its non STOL variant.

  10. If they begin to deploy it in the 404, probably last about the time it reaches operational altitude and speed, with the Russians superb air defense systems.

    1. You mean the air defense that shoots down it's own aircraft?

    2. Let's consult the North Vietnamese, Egyptians, Syrians, and Iraqis about the effectiveness of "Russians superb air defense systems".
I'll wait over at the bar.
