And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Yes we're gonna have a wingding A summer smoker underground It's just a dugout that my dad built In case the reds decide to push the button down We've got provisions and lots of beer The keyword is survival on the new frontier
Introduce me to that big blonde She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld She's wearing Ambush and a French twist She's got us wild and she can tell She loves to limbo, that much is clear She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier
Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city 'Til I finally make up my mind To learn design and study overseas
Do you have a steady boyfriend Cause honey I've been watching you I hear you're mad about Brubeck I like your eyes, I like him too He's an artist, a pioneer We've got to have some music on the new frontier
Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city 'Til I finally make up my mind To learn design and study overseas
Let's pretend that it's the real thing And stay together all night long And when I really get to know you We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn Confess your passion, your secret fear Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier
She was The Hotness in the 1960s, hit the wall by the 1980s, and dropped off the map thereafter, as a perennially unrealized and underutilized star. More famous for being famous than for actually doing anything noteworthy. "Celebrity" vs. "star". Tale as old as time.
Tuesday Weld was beyond me as I was an awkward pre teen but Dobie, Zelda and ("It's only you") Maynard with his dislike of toil "Work!" responses were on my radar.
the movie College Confidential, had in it's cast Rocky Marciano, heavyweight boxing champ, and Conway Twitty, country music star, along with Mamie Van Doren who both were in "Sex Kittens go to College with Jackie Coogan - who broke into Hollywood as the Kid in Charlie Chaplin's movie, but is most famous as Uncle Fester - and Charlie Chaplin Jr... along with Tuesday Weld, who was forced to be the family bread winner by age 8 due to her father's death, by 9 she had a nervous breakdown, by 10 was a drunk, and by 12 attempted suicide.
At age 18 Tuesday had an affair with co-star Elvis, later she married Dudley Moore but turned down the starring roles in Lolita, True Grit, and Bonnie and Clyde, but did star with Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason in Soldier in the Rain, and was on Many Loves of Dobie Gillis for one season along with Norm Grabowski. And Tuesday also starred in Teacher's Pet with Clark Cable and Doris Day, and Jet Pilot with John Wayne, and The Big Operator with Mel Torme, who Les Baxter once played music with... and Mel, Norm, and Mamie all were in Girl's Town 1959 with this car in the LA River storm drains. Steve McQueen and Mamie had a fling too in 1959. Because of her, McQueen publicly threatened to break Howard Hughes' nose if Hughes did not stop harassing Mamie. Needless to say, Hughes never bothered Van Doren again. If you need your brain melted, watch Falling Down with Michael Douglas, and then take a while to deal with the fact that Mrs Pendergrast is played by Tuesday Weld. Yup, Robert Duvall has Tuesday Weld playing his wife. Oh the thing's I've learned while learning about cars
Jesse, I wish we could hang out in the garage... those three paragraphs, I could have written! How many people even know who those people are, anymore? My hat's off to you, brother!!
There's even a UK (London) based band - The Real Tuesday Weld - named after her. A lot of interesting music of their own plus one or two cover versions with their own take, The Day Before You Came (Abba) being one of them.
They filmed that movie at Fort Ord while I was going through basic training. At the end of a day's shoot she rode off with McQueen in his Cobra while we sweated on the parade field. It still hurts.
Dobie Gillis
ReplyDeleteShe was also spoofed on the Flintstones as starlet "Tuesday Wednesday"
DeleteBy far the best actress, and best looking, to ever appear on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."
ReplyDeleteHer "Serial" co-star, Martin Mull, died a few days ago.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fun, mindless film, with a good cast.
She was Kubrick's first choice to play the title role in "Lolita". Turned it down because she said she wouldn't have to act; she WAS Lolita.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, she could have been any day of the week, and I would not have loved or lusted after any less.

First thing I thought of, too.

ReplyDeleteWow. It all comes flooding back. Thanks to all for the memories.
ReplyDeleteShe starred as Bobbie Jo Pepperdine alongside Steve McQueen and Jackie Gleason in "Soldier in the Rain". Great film.

DeleteShe played James Caan wife in the movie Thief.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing her film debut in Hitchcock's The Wrong Man. Film Noir about an innocent man charged with a crime.
