  1. Mom and Pop corner and 'hole in the wall' urban stores are rare nowadays. Corporate has nearly completely done them in.

  2. That hitchin' post mkes a nice addition to a great photo. I've never seen one in front of a Safeway or A&P.

  4. Where I grew up, we had a little Mom & Pop deli in town. D&W Deli. I'd ride my bike up there give Willie the list and he and his wife, Dolores would make up my order. Sometimes I got a cookie to eat (for free) while I waited. No cash register, Willie figured up the total on the paper bag my order was in, handed me my change and off I went. I remember those old phone numbers too. Good times!

  5. Looks like Humpty Dumpty Grocery was a chain in Oklahoma owned by the guy (Sylvan N. Goldman) who invented the shopping cart in 1937.
I never thought of the shopping cart being "invented", it's just always been there! :-)

  6. Depression era invention. He saw that people stopped putting things in their baskets when they got heavy. Add legs to support the weight and wheels to make it easy to move a Presto! increase in sales.
