And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? I can vouch for Sweden. Pretty much anyone you meet will be able to talk to you in English
In the large cities of Poland, most young people speak English. I can attest that they do appreciate it if you manage a few words, such as "thank you". We were in a small grocery and my husband said thank you, dziękuję (sounds like jen-koo-ya) to the clerk. All the Polish people in the place stopped, looked at him, and then clapped and cheered! It was as though they were surprised to hear an American speak just a tiny bit of Polish.
Most younger Dutch people speak better English than a lot of Brits!
ReplyDeleteSame for Iceland and Norway. Very high English skills.

You did better than President Carter when he visited Poland.
DeleteOnly 95% of the English can talk to you in English. Gotit.
ReplyDeleteVibrant Diversity at work.
DeleteIn the US it's only 35%.
DeleteTrip for short week to Sweden in late 1970s found most young people spoke English well if needed directions
ReplyDeleteAmsterdam in 2001, everyone I dealt with spoke excellent English.
ReplyDeleteNever had an issue in Sweden either.
They just learned it because they wanted to listen to ABBA songs.
