And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Daniel in the Lion’s Den (1857) - Horace Vernet
This bit really captures the wild-eyed Lion attitude.
Close to how I imagined this when I was a child, and even now at 61, I think it captures the biblical story in an almost stunning manner. Who is the painting by, do you know?
I wouldn't call those wild eyes. They are intensely intelligent eyes. A reflection of the hand that painted them. Look at the definition and detail of the lion's fur painted with oils. When and why did humanity go from this to the drek we call art today?
