  2. I can, we use to play cowboys and injuns. Cowboys always won. Calvary, and pioneers...not so much.

  3. Just finished Ambrose's book on building the transcontinental railroad.
    They lost a lot of surveyors and track-layers to the Indians. Sherman warned the tribes what would happen to them if they continued the attacks. And Sherman was a man of his word.
    One of the main reasons the government was happy to support the building of the railroad, it reduced the costs and time of manning and supplying the Frontier Forts. They were spending millions on mule skinners and wagons.
    The railroad turned the frontier and the territories from a burden to an asset.

    1. I'm not a big reader, but if you're into American and Western history you won't be able to put that book down. It's great.

      BTW, the title of the book is "Nothing Like It In The World".

  4. Being out in the wilderness exploring where everyone is a danger. That was a long time ago from where I'm sitting but the world is still a big place..
