  2. Artificial "ruins" built in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Michael Chrighton, in his book "The Great Train Robbery," alludes to this practice of workmen building a "ruin" on an estate so as to lend some gravitas to the landowner. It was apparently a "thing" for the nouveau riche back then.
