It's fun to build guns starting with stocks like this

  1. Remember, the figure in the wood is not the grain but spalting, which is a defect, or injury to the tree.

    1. That's burl, not spalting.
      Burl is an injury.
      Spalting is a fungus.
I have several pieces of hardwoods spalting in black plastic bags right now.
Spray the piece with water, put it in the bag, seal the bag, place in dark area for a year or 3. Check it every year to make sure it didn't turn punky.

  2. So very pretty. And so very weak.

  3. It's not all that difficult to stabilze/harden spalted woods by drying them well, infusing with any of several different monomers, and heat/pressure treating resulting in a beautiful piece of wood? that can be easily worked and finished

  4. I used to own a ~1920 Dumoulin 12ga SxS SLE with original 70mm chambers and smoke and honey walnut. Wish I hadn't sold it. Also had a Darne V19 with very pretty wood. Wish I still that one, too.

  5. My brother had a Darne that was not so marked, but was manufactured in the same town. A Darne?

    1. Or, go cut it out yourself.

Some years ago a massive Maple tree complete with huge burl washed up on the nearby beach. The burl itself measured about 4x9' in the round.

Woodworkers were salivating. Cutting off large pieces but not so large they couldn't be hauled up a 40' bluff was a problem. But a greater problem was the state had recently declared the beach as oart of a marine sanctuary. Removing even a pebble from the beach was strictly verboten. Yeah, idiotic.

Over the course of months, the burl disappeared chunk by chunk and always at night. Much of the tree trunk too. Curiously, it seemed everyone wworked in unspoien unity; cutting the trunk would have to wait. Taking the trunk would upturn the burl to lie deep in the sand, so the burl had to go first.

Over the following years, the retail shop of the woodworker's guild featured many handsome creations from Maple burl. As far as I know, no one was prosecuted by the bureaucratic moronic state.
