An owl was a common symbol on Athenian coins




                   Athenian coin discovered in Pushkalavati, Shaikhan                         Dehri  hoard, Charsadda, Pakistan), Circa 500 BC. 

In 2007, a small coin hoard was discovered that contained this tetradrachm of Athens, in addition to a number of local types, some blank flans, and four cake-type cast ingots. This coin is the earliest known example of its type to be found so far east.

  1. The Owl of Minerva. Part of the motto of Union College in Schenectady. The second oldest engineering program in the country resides there.

  2. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war and the owl was her totem. I've read both that Athens is named after Athena and that Athena is named after Athens.
