And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I tried to do that to my daughter when she was about ten. I pushed her head a little, then I felt like sh1t. Instantly. I still feel like a heel when I remember that. My job isn't to humiliate my kid, but train them in their natural talents and promote self-discipline.
That older gal found out she didn't get to eat any of that cake!
When I was a kid, my sister and I would fight over the "last piece of cake." It never occurred to us that we could have cut the last piece into two pieces and shared it. So I thought of a great plan. I licked my fingers and then used those fingers to touch the cake -- voila! My sister didn't want to eat that last piece! Except my mother was one step ahead of me. She told me, "if your sister can't eat any of that cake, you're not going to eat it either!" And then my mother threw that last piece of cake into the garbage can.
I learned to share things with my sister after that!
