And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Colossal Cannon. I hope they shoot those once in a while.
I got to go to Cape Town, South Africa, a few years ago. They have the tradition of the “Noon Gun”. It has been a tradition for a cannon to be fired from the slopes of Signal Hill at precisely 12:00 PM local time every day, excluding Sundays and public holidays. The cannons are cared for by the South African Navy and the firing is executed by the South African Astronomical Observatory. They’ve been doing this since the 1800’s. It was a lot of fun to be up on Signal Hill and watch, hear, and feel the cannon go off! Dale (Moscow, Idaho) sends.
As I recall, it was common in historical times for gubmints to make fake but fearsome-looking armaments to show in and around their official buildings - this pair of cannons might be examples. Ever see the rooms you had to walk through at places like Windsor Castle before you got to see the King ? They are chok-filled to the gills with armaments to send the obvious message - If you mess around with us, there will be consequences.
Cannon named "Wolf". Used in Livonian wars (1558–1583) and captured by Swedes in 1578. Shot 16kg cannonballs. Made in Moscow by Andrey Chokhov in 1577. https://www.reddit.com/r/ArtefactPorn/comments/nm8yxj/cannon_named_wolf_used_in_livonian_wars_15581583/

ReplyDeleteAt some point in time , all guns become only suited to be wall hangers. Old metal but still works of art.
