And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Soviet soldiers of the 127th Guards Artillery Regiment, 59th Guards Motor Rifle Division
The Great Patriotic War (WW2) saw the Red Army and accompanying civilian devastation, lose 24 million people. That was just under 20% of the population. The US lost 418,500, almost none of whom were civilians. While manufacturing, east of the Urals, was untouched, much of the country was wiped out. It's useful to appreciate that the Nazis were exhausted primarily by their assault on the Russians and the subsequent Russian assault on them. It's a fact that Americans often overlook - but Russians never do.
One of the reasons we established and maintained the Murmansk convoys despite their hideous cost. We proved willing to pay just about any price to keep Russia in the war and prevent a repeat of the Great War.
