And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Oh, sure, show the cute one. But nobody ever shows the F-84 straight wings, no, the workhorses of the USAF jets in Korea, and the first single engine fighter to carry a nuke. The F-86, well, it's cute.
I loved flying it and did not find it unforgiving. The 86 was the last of the "Kick the tires , light the fires" fighter jets. Your first flight was solo as there were no dual F-86s. The RCAF mark 6 was the ultimate 86 but you had to be careful not to auger in pulling too much "G" on final turn.
In capable hands (e.g., Ted Williams and John Glenn) it also established air superiority over the MIG 15, which in turn was superior to every other air plane in Korea, especially the F 84, which it relegated to ground support.

ReplyDeleteEver since I discovered one of the little local county airports around here has one on display, I've had a soft spot for the Sabre Jet
