  6. If "wind power" i.e. free fuel was economical then they would never have built steamships.
    The cost of maintaining and replacing the cordage plus the sails and the masts was enormous. There was a story about the dinner McKay gave for the backers and owners of the "Flying Cloud" in NYC. As a centerpiece the hardwood blocks that were pounded into the space between the masts and the frame were placed.
    After one round trip to the East you could reach into the block and tear handfuls of pulped wood fiber out. Much of the ships establishment had to be replaced after a voyage.
