Nice Pair

  1. The maker did what he could to make it weather-resistant. Maybe powder coat on most of the blade, and synthetic scales. I’ve assembled a few knives, and I like to use plastic-impregnated wood for the scales, and I also like to attached them with screws because it makes it easier to give the knife a very thorough cleaning, and you don’t bugger things up trying to get them apart. (I say “assembled” because although I’ve reshaped some blades I’ve never made one from scratch.)

    1. IMHO that coating on the blade is a waste. It gets scarred and nicked with use, especially if you're doing things like batoning. I strip that coating off of the ESSE's that I have. I mask off the tang so that the coating stays on under the scales. A light coat of mineral oil on the blade is all one needs to prevent rust. ESSE makes great, affordable knives in my experience. Sharp and tough blades that keep an edge.
