      Ever heard of Doug Fir (Douglas Fir), John? It's probably what your home is framed in. It's a softwood. It has a BTU rating of 26.5 BTU per cord. California Black Oak, the premiere California hardwood firewood, has a rating of 27.4 BTU per cord.
