Harvest

  1. I retired from farming six years ago, but the most satisfying time of the year was making the opening pass through the field with the combine. All the work to produce a crop came down to that first pass.

    1. Why start in the middle?

    2. Starting in the middle - let's say it will take 12 swaths/passes to get all the field. The combine needs some space to make two 90 degree turns to start on the next pass. Since you need that space anyway, you start on swath 7 then go over to swath 1 and go back down, then do 8 & 2, then 9 & 3, 10 & 4, 11 & 5, and finally 12 and 6. The distance traveled between swaths remains the same all the way through the field. You can plan it so when you finish the last pass you are also close to the field exit.

    3. Hey Paul, I'm a 65 year old dairy farmer and I agree, corn is just satisfying to harvest, be it silage or grain. Small grain or hay just isn't, corn you spent the whole year for this one crop. It's the highlight of the year, and sadly the end also. Well as the farmers also say, Next Year!

    4. I did tractor work in vineyards for many years or picking for that matter. Figure out the total number of rows and divide by 'x' for it to work out evenly. Down, then back up. When picking it gave you a rough idea how many rows to fill the hopper or the trailing tractor so the second tractor could be in position to slide in if mid row.

    2. Check out you bastard tractor Co by quick dick mcdick on you tube. He doesn't specifically mention John deere, but the tractor is green and how he describes buying parts sounds just like John deere.
