    1. American battleships through the Iowas were limited to a beam of 108 feet in order to fit thought the Canal locks (110 feet wide). The Montanas would have been the first to exceed that with a waterline beam of 115 feet and hence would have to instead circumnavigate South America if need be. Several of the pre-war battleships rebuilt after Pearl Harbor could no longer fit though the Canal as their new blisters made them too beamy.
