And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

View of the battleship USS Iowa (BB 61) passing through the Gaillard Cut during its transit of the Panama canal, 8 June 1984
American battleships through the Iowas were limited to a beam of 108 feet in order to fit thought the Canal locks (110 feet wide). The Montanas would have been the first to exceed that with a waterline beam of 115 feet and hence would have to instead circumnavigate South America if need be. Several of the pre-war battleships rebuilt after Pearl Harbor could no longer fit though the Canal as their new blisters made them too beamy.
Awesome !!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know they could fit through the canal.
