And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
What's nice is that the sub is out of the water and won't rust away like most of America's naval exhibits. If I remember correctly, there are two US subs displayed dry. One is the U505 in Chicago and the other in the central US somewhere. Of course, there is the USS Hawkbill sail displayed in Arco, Idaho.
It would be nice if Olympia, Texas and the other historical ship displays were out of the water and not rusting away.
Depending on your definition of submarine, DSRV-1 Mystic is displayed ashore in Keyport, WA. and the bathyscaphe Trieste is in a museum in Washington, DC. Cavalla (SS-244) is ashore in Galveston, Texas. Marlin (SST-2) is ashore in Omaha, NE. Drum (SS-228) is ashore in Mobile, AL. Albacore (AGSS-569) is ashore in Portsmouth, NH. USS Batfish (SS-310) is ashore in Muskogee, OK.
Then there is the USS Ling in Hackensack-ack-ack-ack, New Jersey. As one might expect for a historical memorial in NJ, it is neglected. Flooded some years ago by "urban explorers" who stole some bronze memorial plaques inside (tweakers selling the bronze for scrap perhaps?). Future uncertain. The Hackensack River is essentially a wide spot in the storm drainage system for sludge to settle out of the liquid (if you've eve seen it, it's a stretch to call it "water"). https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/uss-ling-what-to-know-of-new-jerseys-lost-submarine-stuck-in-the-mud/ar-AA1fLJQf also this https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/bergen/hackensack/2019/07/23/uss-ling-vandalism-hackensack-charges-upgraded-five-suspects-break-ins/1809921001/

ReplyDeleteThey can still rust it just takes longer. Weather wind, snow. rain, sleet and hail all play a part in rusting away.
