And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The Old House, Lower Lydbrook, Gloucestershire, England.
Old houses are gorgeous magnificent. But they were built when only horses and wagons rolled quietly by the front door. These days the kiddies would get splattered if they step off the curb. An old house on acreage away from the boulevard is the optimal location.
It's 'officially' known as Sarah Siddon's house. It dates back to 1718 (with a later addition on the side). It's 'listed' as 'Grade 2' (of 'only' mild local historical significance).
The 'funny' thing is (at least to people from that relatively young nation ... America) it's not particularly 'old' for that area, and certainly not for Britain (e.g. I live in a 'cottage' that dates back to 1620, not particularly notable or special, and it's not even close to being thought of as the old house around here).
With the idiocy of the 1960's "architects" and "urban planners" there are less such than there were, but still way more than you'd imagine. Whereas 'backwaters' (that escaped that self same 60's nihilist madness) like Estonia and Lithuania, most of entire towns and cities are older than that.
I wonder how many of the modern identical boxes will be around in a decade, let alone a few hundred years.
Actually I'm 6' 5" and, whilst I'm generally OK in most of the rooms, purely coincidentally, every door lintel has a quite deep head-shaped dent in it (I will remember to duck one day).
But, saying that, it's not much better in modern houses - the whole world is designed and built for short people (some days I wonder if I've somehow been transported to either Oz or next-door to Charlie's chocolate factory, they're so many short orange people about).
And no(!) I wont get something from the top shelf for you, if you wont offer to get something from the bottom one (Oh, my aching back) for me. ;-)
Nothing that is built today or 50 years ago will be around like the castles and homes in Europe, even Roman buildings are still around because limestone regenerates which was recently discovered as to why these buildings are still standing.
The animals were kept in the undercroft at night.
ReplyDeleteWhile Snuffy Smith was an American cartoon of a Chicken thieving hillbilly, they are a real threat everywhere and every time.
ReplyDeleteAsk Philadelphia about that.
If you cannot secure it, it's not yours.

Do you constantly have to duck your head?
DeleteNot if you are a person of diminutive stature.

ReplyDeleteJust down the street from me (upstate NY) is an old tavern / inn, the oldest standing building in the county, built in 1792. It's a museum.
