And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

The sailing master's quarters on HMS Warrior (1860)
Do notice, though not totally big picture, the gun isn't lashed to the hull, so if fired that gun would jump back with no resistance. And moving a few tons back in place won't be easy.
Look at the big rope just to the right of the back end of the cannon at the bottom of the pic. Cannons were always lashed down so they didn't move when the ship rolled, hence the phrase 'loose cannon'. Interesting sights and I think that is a percussion cap lock attached to a lanyard. Al_in_Ottawa
