Actually, once the Europeans began trading with the tribes closes to water access, the demise of the Bison was all but guaranteed. It also created some serious warfare between the tribes - the Blackfoot and Blood were almost wiped completely off the Prairie by the Cree who always had the latest in guns. And many of the other tribes did not appreciate the Cree's penchant for waste when the times were good. The Blackfoot often used a place called Smashed In Head Buffalo Jump for guiding the herds into their demise. I visited there when I was quite young and then later after I had an appreciation for the topography.
My lotto bucket list is that I could make quite a nice living until I died rendering bronzes of all the fantastic 2D art Remington and Russell never turned into 3D.
