A clear Saturday means that the open road calls. A co-worker told me about a burger joint way north and east of here which served excellent burgers in the little town of Adin.
East on 44, then south away from Lassen toward Burney. High desert, lots of lava flows.
Lassen on the left, receding into the southwest.
Dropping down into the Fall River Valley. A surprising amount of agriculture here.
On the other side of the valley is Adin, and you aren't all that far from Alturas, and after that the Oregon border.
Oney Frosty, the legendary spot for chow in this part of the world.
The Fire Burger, which is what I got. Can't have too many jalapeños!
Shake Heaven
After the feast, back across the face of the planet to Redding
Mmmm, Banana shakes.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem is they've got so many intriguing flavors a guy would be tempted to try something different. Might be best to move to Adin so you can try 'em all!
Thanks for taking us along again, CW! Your road trips are always fun.
Wonder what kind of action they get and if there's anything special with the marshmellow shake...dude
DeleteBeautiful Country out thataway!
ReplyDeleteHow much did you spend in gasoline money to make that trip?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing. I bet the trip was a big refresher for the soul (on the way) and palate (destination - yum!). I bet that would have been an awesome journey on a motorcycle!

Looks gorgeous there... too bad so many people fucked california up.
ReplyDeleteOh, now I'm wanting to go there!
ReplyDeleteAccording to the map, the way the crow flies, that was about 86 miles one way.
ReplyDeleteOnline pix show that as a place that builds real tall burgers then slams a knife down in the top. I'd give it a try.
That is one great menu for shakes. I'm glad to see that .smoothies' haven't knocked them off the menu. I hope you and significant other had a great time on your journey.
ReplyDeleteHa. You just drove right past our house. I can almost see it in your last photo. The Oney Frosty is the BEST!!
ReplyDeleteFall River Mills? If I lived closer, Oney Frosty would get a lot of my money. It's right in the middle of town, but while we were outside eating two deer were hanging out on the lawn of the house that's right across the street. Next, I'm gonna do an all day drive and try to make the Oregon border via Alturas, then back down 395 to Susanville, and then 44 past the park to Redding. Gorgeous country, doesn't seem part of the same state that contains SF and LA.
DeleteYep. State of Jefferson! We love it here.
DeleteA part of California I've never seen is the country east of Alturas: Over Cedar Pass and into Surprise Valley, Fort Bidwell and Cedarville. Then I'd love to check out the Warner Mountains, including Fandango Pass. It was recommended by a high school friend whose Mom grew up in Alturas.
DeleteI remember the Hat Creek area before the fires when it had trees growing on it. Hardly recognized it the last time we passed through. Bought a few guns at Hat Creek Sporting Goods. The gun store and cafe must have burned down.
ReplyDeleteIn Texas, they normally call the eating places with roll-up garage doors, 'icehouse's'. Some of them actually were icehouses back in the 1800's, early 1900's. They're the best places for down-to-earth vittles. Looks like a nice ride too.
ReplyDeleteHappy Father's day CW, and the same to all the Dad's out there.
Years ago around '79 or '80 I was in the UP of Michigan near the Soo to install a NOAA Weather Radio transmitter, way out in the boonies. Wasn't much around, but the antenna rigger and I managed to find a little bar that served lunch. I had the best bowl of chili I've ever had, and the burger was first rate too. Little out of the way places have to give you a reason to drive all the way out there.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the BBQ plug, we appreciate it. I look forward to meeting you - see you at the t-shirt booth :-)
