And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

HMS Foudroyant, a ship of 80-guns launched in 1798 and one time flagship to Lord Nelson, wrecked off Blackpool in 1897.
If you can believe the wiki: In June 1897 she was towed to Blackpool and could be visited for a small entrance fee.
On 16 June 1897 during a violent storm, she parted a cable and dragging the remaining anchor, went ashore on Blackpool Sands, damaging Blackpool North Pier in the process.[24][25] The Blackpool lifeboat was able to rescue all 27 of her crew.[26]
After vain attempts to refloat her, her guns were removed and she was sold for £200. She finally broke up in the December gales.[24] Craftsmen used flotsam from the wreck to make furniture,[27] and, between 1929 and 2003, the wall panelling of the boardroom of Blackpool F.C.'s Bloomfield Road ground.[26] The ship's bell now resides in Blackpool Town Hall.[28] Copper, salvaged from the wreck, was used to manufacture medals, which were sold to the general public
Yes, it was built almost 225 years ago, but it certainly is not 225 years old. It was only 99 years old when this photo was taken. And since it didn't survive beyond 1897, it never made it to 100 years old, much less 225.
IMHO it's pretty amazing that a wooden ship lasted 100 years!!!
ReplyDeleteShe was still pretty good looking for a century-old ship. I wonder how many of the original hull planks were left by the end..
