  1. Brings to mind the beginning of Fantasia's Ave Maria segment. Such a beautiful scene.

  2. Nice feat of engineering. Looks far older than the year it was built, 1870. Had to look that up cause I thought it was far older.

  3. They made the arch that tall to allow the cruise ships to pass under.

    1. It looks unnecessarily tall, then I wondered about ship clearance.

    2. I checked out some pictures of this bridge on line and, based on the folks wading under the bridge, the water there is about shin deep in the summer. It looks like the road beds on the approaches on both sides of the bridge are what’s driving the bridge height.

  4. Kinda tight and shallow for a cruise ship.

  5. The height is driven by design. It has to be an arch because it's supported by the layer of stones in compression resting on one another. One loose stone and the whole thing comes crumbling down. Very old construction method - solid, but kinda sketchy when you stop and think about it. Look at other old construction and you'll see arches and domes that allow brick on brick without any other type of support.

    1. You haven't gone north enough. Epiros gets snow and gets very cold.
      I know because it's home.
