They are celebrating the Guéréwol festival where the young men of the Woodabé try to attract the attention of the young women of their tribe for purposes of marriage. They do so by applying extravagant make-up, hour-long courting dances and exhibiting their sportive prowess.
Back in the day I tried the hour long dance method. The result was the same as Eddie Cochran's Twenty Flight Rock. Moved on to easier (and quicker) methods.
