Ahab

  1. "Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!"

  2. It was the perfect movie for Peck, which is not to say I liked the book, or Peck.

    1. I tolerate Peck for the sake of "The Big Country" based on a Donald Hamilton story. I've never made it more than a few pages into "Moby Dick". It's gay porn.

    2. I thought he was a pompous ass in most of his roles, although I thought he did a pretty good job in 'Roman Holiday'.

    3. I still watch Guns of Navarone every few years.
The world in his arms is one of my favorite movies.

  6. Wonder if Ahab was modeled after a real whaling Captain?

    1. The book was inspired by a true story, which is far more harrowing than the novel. Nathaniel Philbrick wrote an excellent book about it called "In The Heart of the Sea"

  7. Not even in, "12 O'clock High"? It stared Gregory Peck as Brig. General Frank Savage. He was nominated for an Academy Award. Also, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards [Gregory Peck (for best actor)], and won two.

    1. If you're asking me, well I've seen 12 o'clock high and I enjoyed the movie, it was a good tense war drama. But I find Peck always wooden. He's the same guy in almost every picture, there's no imagination to him, no invested emotion. When he takes his pants off at night, the crease is still there. The character in 12 o'clock high should have been Best Actor with a role like that - instead they used Peck, and he rolled out his standard chiselled strong-silent type performance. Imagine if Gable had taken that part, what he could have done with that role. Just my opinion of course, not saying that Peck wasn't an accomplished actor in his own way.

Gary Merrill read me and a bunch of other boys a kids' version of A Christmas Carol once upon a time, in December a very long time ago.

    2. See "Command Decision". Gable plays an 8th Air Force General. A very similar role to that of General Frank Savage.

  8. I watched Moby Dick on one of the movie channels a month or so ago. It's still as good a yarn today as it was when released.
