And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
If you've never shot a 454 casull hole heartily recommend nor. Ruger super Redhawks trigger guard hangs a little low. Like to tore my middle finger off and almost wet my pants. Lol Backwoods Okie
I shot a .454 years ago at a range in Orlando. Kick wasn't too bad, or so I thought. Gave it to my brother-in-law with 2 rounds left. First round, he hit himself between the eyes with the sight rib and uttered the immortal phrase 'What in the name of good fuck was that!'. The range officer told me I was 'The first tourist to fire more than one cylinder-full and asked did I not feel recoil. I told him 20+years of martial arts tended to harden your arms up.
My 7 1/2" Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull is one of the best balance guns I've ever owned and my 110lb wife can shoot it without any problem at all. You guys must be limp wristing it.
Hornady's 460 is not too shabby: Monoflex 200gr, 2,150fps with 2,053ft/lb. HSM's: 454: 300gr XTP, 1600fps, 1706ft/lb. 460: 300gr XTP, 2000fps, 2665ft/lb. However, back in the day, tiny Bella Twin downed a Canadian grizzly with a .22long (not .lr) to the skull. . . . Shot placement. I'd rather shoot than spray - not so great to be downwind, and get a start from farther away.
Big NOPE on the 454 Casull. A buddy of mine has one and he conned me into shooting it. I have a 44mag and had no problems shooting hot magnum loads where I figured this wouldn't be much worse. The Casull sent a shock wave up my arm where it caused problems in my wrist and elbow for the next few days. A 454 Casull has about 2 times the power of a 44Mag. I will stick with my 10mm or 44mag.
Thunder Mountain Ordnance also loads a heavy .45 Colt load, which is a 300 grain hard cast, poly coated bullet, at 1200 fps. Their .44 Magnum load is a 300 grain, hard cast poly coated bullet, at 1300 fps. Their 10mm load is a 200 grain hard cast bullet at 1200 fps. Any (or all) would be good Bear medicine. For packin' in Bear country, I like Springfield's XDm Elite in 10mm. Sixteen rounds of heavy 10mm should be sufficient.
.50AE in a Desert Eagle. Use a shoulder rig to carry it. 300 or 325 gr moving at a hellacious speed. Don't bother with it in a revolver, to slow for backup shots. The auto will have you back on target almost instantly.
Nah, not a Mac B reader. I've put several mags through the .50, and it was amazing how fast it came back on target (with two hands and a Weaver stance). (the indoor range quickly stopped renting it, when they discovered it was destroying their backstop) The point about carrying it in a rig was you could always have it on you, no matter what activity. Long guns ALWAYS get set down for various reasons, even with slings. If it's not on you, you might as well have left it in your vehicle or at home. The recoil management was MUCH better than my Ruger .41mag. I'm talking shot to shot time. It was flat amazingly quick. (and I'm only 5'6"/115 lbs. The guy with me was much bigger, he fired maybe twice, and announced he was done shooting.)
You could try traveling with a slower friend. At my age that's me. At my age, I'm smart enough to stay home with a whisky and listen when they get back.
Interesting how all the really hot loads and their expensive platforms are equal to a 12ga slug... The lowly 12ga: Where would we be without it? Mike in Canada
Seems like stopping bears is more about luck than weapon choice. Bob Baker, owner of Freedom Arms, explained to me he'd emptied one revolver and put two more from his backup into the Brown Bear in his lobby before it stopped. My buddy, an experienced bear hunter, hit an Alaska Brown five times with a .458 Win and watched it run off (this guy further states he would flat-out never shoot a bear with a handgun). Both these cases were anticipated hunting situations, not panic holy-shit-a-charging-bear encounters.
As for the 454, the three single-actions I've owned provided the most miserable shooting experiences I've ever had out of hundreds of firearms. Double-actions not so bad. Generally not at all controllable for the average shooter, who would be lucky to get off a follow-up shot before being overrun.
You know how you can tell Black Bear scat from Grizzly Bear scat? (Scat is shit for you city boys)
ReplyDeleteThe Black Bear scat is firm mostly round and has berries and twigs in it.
Grizzley Bear scat is looser, larger, can have bear bells in it and smells like pepper spray.
2+ alert guys with 12 Gauge with slugs accept no substitutes.
I shoot Remington Buckhammer slugs. 1.25 oz. rings in at about 550 gr.
DeleteLot to be said for slugs.

ReplyDelete240 gr (16 g) XTP JHP Hornady 1,900 ft/s (580 m/s) 1,923 ft⋅lbf (2,607 J)
300 gr (19 g) XTP JHP Hornady 1,650 ft/s (500 m/s) 1,813 ft⋅lbf (2,458 J)
The ballistics of a 3 inch 12 gauge slug are as follows: Muzzle Velocity - 1600+ fps Muzzle Energy - 3,000+ ft/lb
How does it work on joggers?
ReplyDeleteIf you use hard cast bullets and line up 3 or 4 joggers at a time, it's economical :)

ReplyDeleteAh, a Mac Bolen reader. It's FAR more impressive in fiction adventure books.

Not impressed, for that trouble carry a shorty shotty or carbine.

"Strongest Formula Allowed by the EPA"
ReplyDeleteWhy does the EPA have a say in how strong a bear spray formula is?
Nemo
Fuque the EPA
ReplyDeleteBear spray is also handy in parking lots and at ATMs. It substitutes for a taser where they're illegal and you can't shoot punks.
