And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
I didn't know of any derelict carriers, but heard of a couple that had been sunk for reefs. I could tell from the Island that it was an Essex class carrier and only knew of one of those that had been sunk and that was Oriskany. There is a documentary about the sinking on You Tube and tells what the navy had to do to reach the point to be able to sink it.
My Division Officer on the Sylvania had been aboard Oriskany when McCain came aboard from Forrestal. He was in the CIC.
Hmm, I recall they cut large x's in the deck or the Oriskany. Big enough for fish to get in and out but too small for the divers. I don't see them on there.
An incredible amount of material salvage from the interior and decontamination of hazardous materials was performed prior to its sinking. The Oriskany now provides a massive marine life habitat in an otherwise featureless sandy bottom. There are also a scuba diving opportunities which generate business income for the area. Explain how this is a "commie action."
Shit, Anonymous @8:35, for the huge expense of material salvage and thorough decontamination, we could have built condos for 10 times as many fish for less money.
I remember seeing the prep / sinking video of this a long time ago. The prep was a huge amount of work. This looks like it's taken as she was sinking. Why did they leave the small boat on the deck I wonder?
I've been to Oriskany NY, just a decaying upper NY town off I95. Remington's NY headquarters are just down the road. Had dinner at a Friendlys got a Jim Dandy too. Hadn't had one in 40 years, they got smaller. I also have a Pensacola condo. The NAS P'cola Museum of Naval Aviation (should be on everyone's bucket list) has some Oriskany items on display.
The " artificial reef " is a cover story. it's done to see how long the nuclear reactor compartment takes to get flooded. y'know just like Chernobyl only wetter.
USS Oriskany, The Mighty O, CV-34. Scuttled off Pensacola.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad was an Engineering Officer on her right out of Maine Maritime in '56.
