The brand new Lisbon Lounge on the mezzanine level of the TWA terminal in the Idlewild (soon to be renamed JFK) airport, New York, 1962. Although the terminal was designed by the famous architect Eero Saarinen, the consultant for restaurant design was Raymond Loewy.
Swanky, even a bit swellegant…
ReplyDeleteAs a kid I flew through the TWA terminal in 1977. Didn’t go to the lounge but the terminal was still very futuristic and cool for a 14 year old traveling on his own for the first time.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm a fan of most of Loewy's designs, this restaurant/bar is uninviting and I would feel off-balance eating or drinking there.
ReplyDeletedunnos, but perhaps more often as not, designer's work more reflects the ta$ter of the customer. And some people's taste doesn't go much beyond their tongue.
ReplyDeleteGotta love Midcentury Modern cool style
ReplyDeleteBond wouldn't go in that. But Ernst Blofeld might.
ReplyDeleteYeah, not Bond.
DeleteMaybe Flint, Napoleon Solo, or Simpon Templar.
The terminal is now a hotel.
