  1. The painter took a little bit of care for the face but only roughed in the rest, then quit. The hand is a deformed blur and the hardware only a suggestion of whatever.

  2. I have read that, back in the day, a famous portrait painter would have assistants/apprentices paint the "unimportant" part of portrait (clothing, backgrounds, etc. ), ahead of time even, then the big guy would do the important parts like the actual face.
