Intersting Gadget. Could it be the basis for a side hustle business?

  1. Interesting. I believe it could cut thin wood and plastic before I'd believe it could engrave what looks to be the dog's picture on glass, but there's probably some secret trick I don't know. I mean, going through glass is something light is pretty well known for doing, right?

I looked at putting a laser for light burning and engraving on my small CNC machine and got put off by two things: the burned wood products (ash, smell) that this seems to have a vacuum attachment for, and reports that small fires are pretty common.

I have a Creality 3D printer and I think you'll get something functional for your money from them here, probably for not much more than doing it yourself.

  2. Look up "print farm". Both 3D printing and laser engraving/cutting (same basic device, just a different head) are all over the place and ever'body and his cousin is trying to make a buck with 'em. And in fact, Creality makes some pretty good stuff, though it tends to be mostly lower end/hobby level. Lately they've been moving up; this looks like one of those attempts.

  3. They're fun to play with, but you will quickly fing the limits of those small units. Great for long term, very slow burning engraving. 10x10" taking hours, literally over night with some jobs. Definitely not a money maker vs. time. (find a small format K40 for cheap, they might net you a gain on income) They DO need an enclosure for both smoke removal as well as a containment for any chance of a: reflected laser light into the surrounding area and b: any chance of fire you might come by. My 100W had a 'small' fire earlier this year, and it was $$$ to get it back together. The smaller unit has only caught paper on fire, without damaging anything more than my pride so far.
