And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
When is the last time anyone saw an XKE, MGB, Triumph, or Austin-Healey on the road? I suppose that many are "garage queens" now, but the poor mechanical and electrical designs seemed to have destroyed a major part of the British auto industry. Why could a country that produced the Spitfire not produce a reliable sports car?
In the 80s, I attended a class at Fort Knox. The instructor from California said he loved the MGB and that he owned two. That way, he said, he would always have one he could actually drive because one of them was always in the shop.
A group got together at Hazy Mountain Brewery and Winery in Virginia a month ago, 3 Avantis, 2 Model Ts, at least one MGB and MGA, and one 30s era Rolls with some super carriage work. And about two dozen more beauties. I’m sure nearly all were pulled out for whatever event/celebration was going on locally and these guys broke off and ended up there for dinner, but it was still a fun perusal through the parking lot.
Early 1963 R3. All downhill for Avanti after that.
ReplyDeleteDidn't see many when they were new either.
ReplyDeleteI remember this beautiful automobile. I understand that if Studebaker had the temerity to stick with it, they might be in business today.

There used to be one on a pole in the Rio grande Valley. Made me a bit sick seeing it up there.
ReplyDeleteTo me, Avanti's front always has looked like the tail of a car with a couple of headlights pasted onto it.
ReplyDeleteYou know, there's an Italian restaurant in Normal, IL called Avanti's. Not bad, great bread. Don't miss out on the Gondola sub.
ReplyDelete1963 was the only year with the round headlights (my dad had one.) The later Avanti's, as well as the later Avanti !!'s had square headlights.
