  2. It doesn't look like a real photo to me, because I'm thinking they always leave an arch in the ceilings for stability's sake. Salt is a plastic rock - it tends to creep over time.

  7. There is an old salt mine outside of Kansas City, MO. It is now a storage facility for imported stuff. I remember running a 10 K race there back in the early 1980's and the temp was a steady 60 degrees. I looked it up and it's called "SubTropolis."

    1. the one I mention above is used for storage, also- acetone, for one. nobody was really aware parts of it being used for it. the office was/is?on a back street in a tin building. there was also a neutrino detecter set up in a portion of the mine. IIRC there's a PBS Nova on the subject.
